Nov. 17 (Bloomberg) -- China and the World Health Organization agreed to open an influenza research center in Beijing to identify and share knowledge about new strains.

Approval to open the center was given last week, when health officials and WHO Assistant Director-General Keiji Fukuda met in Beijing, China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention said in a statement on its Web site today. Arrangements to formally designate the laboratory as a WHO collaborating centre are still being worked out, the United Nations health agency said.

The new collaborating center for reference and research on influenza will join a network of WHO-affiliated labs in Atlanta, London, Tokyo and Melbourne that monitor flu strains and make recommendations on vaccines to fight the virus. A center in Beijing may enable scientists to more quickly identify new strains that emerge in China, said John Mackenzie, a Melbourne- based virologist who chaired the WHO’s emergency committee responding to the influenza pandemic sparked by swine flu.

“It will be ideal to have a center in China because it’s the cradle of influenza evolution,” Mackenzie said in a telephone interview today.

The WHO collaborating center in Beijing “will not only greatly enhance China’s ability to monitor and prevent flu from spreading, but also increase China’s influence and power in decision-making in the area,” according to the CDC’s statement.

China sought WHO approval for the center two years ago and lodged an official request in March 2008, it said.

The WHO center will be located at China’s National Influenza Center, which was established in 1957 and joined the WHO flu surveillance network in 1981.

After 30 minutes working on him we called it and I went and broke news to the family - very upsetting for all!

First thing his daughter said - "I knew he should not have had the Swine Flu jab yesterday - I knew it could kill him"

In the 1930s, a vitamin D deficiency disease called rickets was a major public health problem in the United States so a milk fortification program was implemented nearly eliminating this disorder.4,9 Currently, about 98% of the milk supply in the US is fortified with 400 International Units (IU) of vitamin D per quart.

2. Sun Exposure as a Vitamin D Source

Exposing yourself to sunlight is the most important source of vitamin D because sunlight is far more likely to provide you with your vitamin D requirement than food is.13 UV rays from the sun trigger vitamin D production in your skin.13-14 Lights from your home are not strong enough to produce vitamin D. Season, geographic latitude, time of day, cloud cover, smog, and sunscreen affect UV ray exposure and vitamin D synthesis.14 For example, sunlight exposure from November through February in Boston is insufficient to produce significant vitamin D synthesis in the skin.

Obviously any point of north of Boston is worse. Complete cloud cover halves the energy of UV rays, and shade reduces it by 60%. Industrial pollution also filters sun exposure and may contribute to the development of rickets if you have insufficient dietary intake of vitamin D.15

Sunscreens with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 8 or greater will block UV rays that produce vitamin D. An initial exposure to sunlight of 10 to15 minutes allows you adequate time for Vitamin D synthesis and should be followed by application of a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to protect the skin. Ten to fifteen minutes of sun exposure at least two times per week to the face, arms, hands, or back without sunscreen is usually sufficient to provide adequate vitamin D.14 If you have limited sun exposure it is very important that you include good sources of vitamin D in your diet or supplement with AlgaeCal Plus.
What is the Recommended Intake for Vitamin D?

The RDA, developed by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences,4 recommends the average daily intake that is sufficient to meet the nutrient requirements of healthy individuals in each age and gender group. An Adequate Intake (AI) is set when there is insufficient scientific data available to establish a RDA.

The Institute of Medicine determined there was insufficient scientific information to establish a RDA for vitamin D. According to the Institute of Medicine, food consumption data suggests intakes of vitamin D for both younger and older women are below current recommendations.4 The data suggests more than 50% of younger and older women are not consuming recommended amounts of vitamin D. What is the Best Form of Vitamin D Supplement?

Houghton, in a 2006 article appearing in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition18 points out that vitamin D2, the synthetic variety used for fortification of milk and foods, is inferior to the natural form, vitamin D3 for several reasons. He suggests D2 "should not be regarded as a nutrient suitable for supplementation or fortification."

Authors Goldberg, and Cantorna, show it is very important to take adequate calcium and magnesium along with vitamin D3 supplementation as the three balance each other.
More Vitamin D May Be Better!

Recent science is showing that levels above the Adequate Intake may provide better health. For example, professor Robert Heaney has reported in April 2006 in the Journal of Nutrition his study showing an additional 2600 IU/day of oral vitamin D3 should be given to older women.15

Vieth reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition a recommendation of 4000 IU per day for adults.16 He also showed that levels of 10,000 IU per day were normal from body exposure to the sun and the only published vitamin D toxicity was at levels exceeding 40,000 IU/day.

The National Institutes of Health indicates Vitamin D may have benefit for some forms of Cancer, Osteoporosis, Alzheimers, Chron's Disease and other maladies.17

It seems more studies are warranted on proper vitamin D levels. Given that vitamin D3 is safe at very high levels and may provide extraordinary benefits with no known risk, we recommend individuals get reasonable sun exposure, eat foods rich in vitamin D, and supplement with AlgaeCal Plus.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa Department of Public Health is reporting three more H1N1 flu-related deaths.

Health department officials say the latest victims of the H1N1 virus lived in Fremont, Polk and Union counties. All reportedly had risk factors that increased the chance of complications from the virus.

The latest fatalities, brings to 30 the number of confirmed deaths related to the H1N1 virus.

Health department officials say nearly 700 people in Iowa have been hospitalized because of complications resulting from contracting the virus.

Among those hospitalized, the most common underlying medical conditions were immune-compromised conditions, such as cancer, respiratory ailments and neuromuscular conditions. Many of those hospitalized were overweight or obese.

The premier flu-fighting drug is contaminating rivers downstream of sewage-treatment facilities, researchers in Japan confirm. The source: urinary excretion by people taking oseltamivir phosphate, best known as Tamiflu.

Concerns are now building that birds, which are natural influenza carriers, are being exposed to waterborne residues of Tamiflu’s active form and might develop and spread drug-resistant strains of seasonal and avian flu.

For their new study, Gopal Ghosh and his colleagues at Kyoto University sampled water discharged from three local sewage treatment plants and water at several points along two rivers into which the treated water flowed. Sampling started early in December 2008, as flu season got underway. The researchers sampled again at the height of the seasonal flu’s onslaught in early February and again as infection rates waned.

Tamiflu’s active form, oseltamivir carboxylate or OC, turned up in the treated sewage on every occasion, the researchers report online September 28 in Environmental Health Perspectives. Values were in the low nanograms per liter range during the first and last samplings, and reached a high of almost 300 ng/L at one outflow during the flu’s peak, a week when there were 1,738 recorded flu cases in Kyoto.

River residues showed up during only that second sampling — from low nanogram levels at most sampling points to a high of 190 ng/L in a portion of the Nishitakase River where treated sewage accounts for 90 percent of the flow.

Computer modeling has shown that OC should survive sewage treatment, notes Wolf von Tümpling Jr. of the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research, a federal institute in Magdeburg, Germany. Ghosh’s team is now the first to confirm this, he says. Von Tümpling’s own data show that once exposed to sunlight, OC will break down, albeit slowly. Concentrations would fall at best by half every three weeks, he says.

If correlations predicted by earlier studies are correct, concentrations measured at some river sites in the new Kyoto study seem “high enough to lead to antiviral resistance in waterfowl,” Ghosh says.

And the Kyoto team didn’t test during a pandemic, when Tamiflu prescription rates might be 10 times higher, von Tümpling notes.

Indeed, the expected coincident hits by seasonal and H1N1 swine flu this winter, could send Tamiflu use skyrocketing. In a July 14 letter, Food and Drug Administration deputy commissioner Joshua Sharfstein noted that “there is no adequate, approved and available alternative to the emergency use of certain oseltamivir phosphate products for the treatment and prophylaxis of influenza.”

Once ingested, virtually all Tamiflu will end up in the environment in the active form, notes environmental chemist Jerker Fick of Umeå University in Sweden. The reason: Tamiflu becomes active once the body converts it into a carboxylate form. Roughly 80 percent of an ingested dose becomes this OC, which the body eventually excretes. The body sheds the remaining 20 percent of Tamiflu in its original form, but this phosphate form is immediately turned into the active, carboxylate form when it reaches a water treatment plant, he says.

Two years ago, Fick’s team published data showing that most sewage-treatment technologies will remove “zero percent” of any OC present. And ducks love hanging out around warm, nutrient-rich outflows of treated water during winter-flu season. While sampling for waterborne OC last year in Japan, “I saw it myself,” he says.

If Tamiflu resistance does develop in exposed birds, the affected flu strains will probably be conventional seasonal and avian flu strains, which claim thousands of lives each year, and not H1N1. That’s because H1N1 seems to bypass birds as it spreads among people, notes William Schaffner, chair of preventive medicine at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tenn.

He also notes that U.S. policy is more conservative than Japan’s when it comes to Tamiflu use. Federal guidelines, he says, recommend that “Tamiflu be reserved for treatment of the very sick and anyone who is immunocompromised.”

The drop in cases suggests Canada has hit the critical fraction of the population that needs to be vaccinated to control the pandemic, says Dr. David Fisman, a University of Toronto expert in infectious disease dynamics.
Fisman can't understand the rationale for continuing mass vaccinations. He said that for a virus as contagious as H1N1, less than 30 per cent of the population needed vaccination to reach a critical level of immunity.
"I'm sure that the vaccine has prevented some deaths. I'm sure that there are people who are alive right now who would not have been alive if we hadn't vaccinated," he says.
But the pandemic was already peaking, and then subsiding before the vaccination was rolling out in force.
"That's nobody's fault, that's just how long it took to make a vaccine against a brand new virus. Those were the cards we were dealt," says Fisman, an associate professor of infectious diseases epidemiology at the university.
Despite that view, Canada's top doctor this week pleaded with Canadians to get vaccinated if they have not already done so. Chief public health officer David Butler-Jones said that, while 30 per cent of the population is now immune to H1N1, either because they have been vaccinated or because they have already been infected, "millions" of people are still at risk of infection.

French President Nicolas Sarokozy has announced plans to form paramilitary groups to patrol parts of cities, the „banlieu“, where large numbers of immigrants live, in a move that has disturbing echoes of Fascist Europe in the 1930s.

Private „citizen“ paramilitary groups are supposed to keep „law and order“ in the banlieue. But the decision to set them up ahead of the up ahead of up-coming regional elections will spark fears that will be employed to intimidate political opponents.

Allowing an uregulated armed force to patrol high rise ghettos, blighted by unemployment and poverty and where the residents are disadvanatged by systematic racism, is also sure to create an atrmosphere of intimidation and violence and could ignite large scale social unrest.

The increasingly unpopular Sarkozy and his globalist backers might well, however, be hoping to hang onto power by using the divide and rule tactic.

Funding private armies will drag France down into a spiral of violence, deflecting attention from their financial and other crimes, such as the use of toxic vaccines in vaccination centers.

Shooting protestors is also permitted under the Lisbon Treaty, which came into force on December 1st, and which put Europe under a quasi dictatorship by means of the use of the manipulation of the election process.

As a result of this fraudulent treaty, an EU police force is theoretically allowed to arrest anyone without even having to a reason to the local police, putting their operations outside the law.

However, the Lisbon Treaty has itself no basis in law.

The Nazi German Judges Trail of 1947 ruled that judges and lawyers who assisted the Nazi government in stripping people of their constitutional rights so that they have little or no legal security against the arbitary and brutal violence of state organs are guilty of a crime, specifically of abusing of the judicial and penal process.

The Nuremberg Trial of 1947 also ruled lawyers and judges who had not activity promote Nazi lynch justice and state –organised terror were also guilty on the grounds that their decision to continue in office lent credibility to what had become a criminal justice system.

The same ruling applies to the EU and the Lisbon Treaty and any judge who attempts to enforce its provisions.

An EU law criminalising legitimate reporting of EU crimes is itself an obvious crime.

Europe's drug regulator, the EMEA -- two-thirds funded by the pharmaceutical industry -- allowed uintested and dangerous „swine flu“ vaccines to be approved on the market, but now you can be arrested by the EU police for pointing these facts out.

But this is just one example how the EU is being used as front to further the agenda of an international corporate crime syndicate.

This totalitarian EU structure allowing paramilitary groups and organised corporate funded crime to flourish must be dismantled and the people of Europe need to return to democracy and the rule of law as soon as possible.

The sudden death of a 75-year-old man at home on Friday, two days after he was vaccinated against the H1N1 (swine flu) virus may lead others to hesitate to get vaccinated, officials say.

With H1N1 poised to enter history as the least deadly of four global flu pandemics, some experts are calling for an end to Canada's mass vaccination program.

Nature is already achieving what we would hope to achieve by vaccinating, they say.

H1N1's "reproductive number" -- the number of people each infected person passes the virus to -- was above one when the epidemic began, which led to the explosive initial increase in cases.

Now it is less than one, because many people have become immune, and each old case is making less than one new case. When the reproductive number falls below one, the epidemic can't sustain itself, and fades away.

The drop in cases suggests Canada has hit the critical fraction of the population that needs to be vaccinated to control the pandemic, says Dr. David Fisman, a University of Toronto expert in infectious disease dynamics.

Fisman can't understand the rational for continuing mass vaccinations. He said that for a virus as contagious as H1N1, less than 30 per cent of the population needed vaccination to reach a critical level of immunity.

"I'm sure that the vaccine has prevented some deaths. I'm sure that there are people who are alive right now who would not have been alive if we hadn't vaccinated," he says. But the pandemic was already peaking, and then subsiding before the vaccination was rolling out in force.

"That's nobody's fault, that's just how long it took to make a vaccine against a brand new virus. Those were the cards we were dealt," says Fisman, an associate professor of infectious diseases epidemiology at the university.

Despite that view, Canada's top doctor this week pleaded with Canadians to get vaccinated if they have not already done so. Chief public health officer David Butler-Jones said that, while 30 per cent of the population is now immune to H1N1, either because they have been vaccinated or because they have already been infected, "millions" of people are still at risk of infection.

Someone vaccinated today may be protected against infection two weeks from now, "if there is still enough of (H1N1) kicking around," Fisman says. But the benefit diminishes the further into the future we go, and he says other public health programs have suffered as staff and resources were redeployed to the H1N1 campaign. In some jurisdictions, breastfeeding support programs, sexually transmitted disease clinics and other usual activities were cancelled or postponed as public health was forced to bear the brunt of delivering the largest immunization program in Canada's history.

"At this point, in terms of saying everybody must get vaccinated because there is a pandemic abroad, it's kind of done," Fisman says.

H1N1 will likely fade away with a death rate lower than that for regular seasonal flu.

When the World Health Organization declared the pandemic in June, officials warned the rogue virus threatened all of humanity. The reality is so far proving strikingly different from what was expected.

The world agency, and Canada, had done their pandemic planning with a different flu virus in mind. They spent five years watching H5N1, or "bird flu," which kills up to 60 per cent of those it infects.

We got off lucky when the real pandemic hit, WHO says, but the public doesn't always understand that.

"Adjusting public perceptions to suit a far less lethal virus has been problematic," WHO said in a statement Thursday, issued in response to media reports that ties with the drug industry among expert advisers may have influenced WHO's policy decisions related to H1N1.

"Given the discrepancy between what was expected and what has happened, a search for ulterior motives on the part of WHO and its scientific advisers is understandable, though without justification.

"WHO has consistently assessed the impact of the current influenza pandemic as moderate. WHO has consistently reminded the medical community, public and the media that the overwhelming majority of patients experience mild influenza-like illness and recover fully within a week, even without any form of medical treatment." But some critics say WHO set itself up for blame.

"They had been talking for years about the possibility of some kind of reprise of the 1918 pandemic," says Philip Alcabes, author of Dread: How Fear and Fantasy Have Fueled Epidemics from the Black Death to the Avian Flu. "A huge amount of money and person power was devoted to preparing" for the next outbreak, he says.

But, "there was never any evidence, not from Day 1, and not anytime since, that this strain of flu was going to be a particularly dangerous strain, either in terms of its capacity to make people sick or its capacity to kill people," says Alcabes, associate professor in urban public health at Hunter College's School of Health Sciences in the City University of New York.

In a statement issued Friday, the European drug regulator said data from GlaxoSmithKline PLC showed a higher number of children aged six months to 3 years had a fever after their second dose of the Pandemrix vaccine, compared with the first. Kids were also more likely to have side effects like muscle pain, drowsiness, and irritability.

The European regulator recommends children get two doses of swine flu vaccine, though Glaxo says one dose is enough.

Glaxo's vaccine contains an adjuvant, a chemical compound to boost the immune response. It is sold across Europe and Canada.

Another formulation of Glaxo's vaccine, without the adjuvant, is available in the U.S. Vaccines with adjuvants usually cause more side effects. No flu vaccines with adjuvants are licensed in the U.S.

Last month, Glaxo advised health authorities not to use one batch of its Canadian-manufactured swine flu vaccine in case it triggered life-threatening side effects like anaphylactic shock.

In a press briefing on Thursday, the World Health Organization's flu chief Keiji Fukuda said that more than 150 million doses of swine flu vaccine have been distributed in more than 40 countries and that they had not seen any evidence to suggest the vaccines caused worrying side effects.

The Lowndes County School District has decided not to complete its first round of H1N1 flu vaccine injections.

After nine Caledonia High School students were taken to the emergency room Nov. 4 for adverse reactions to the vaccine, LCSD Superintendent Mike Halford said Thursday, students who did not receive the first round of injections would not receive the vaccine at school.

“We’re not going to finish the schools. There were too much problems we had on that part. The liability part,” said Halford.

Caledonia Elementary and Middle schools, West Lowndes Elementary and Middle schools and New Hope kindergarten through third-graders did not receive the vaccine before injections — which were administered by Mississippi University for Women nursing students through a partnership with the Mississippi State Department of Health — were halted after students complained of symptoms including shortness of breath, hives and fever.

The LCSD had intended to continue with the injections, but Halford said school officials experienced difficulty validating signatures on parental permission slips.

The district was not threatened with legal action following the student reactions.

Surrounding school districts intend to continue facilitating the vaccinations as planned. Columbus, West Point, Starkville and Oktibbeha County school districts will allow the vaccines to be administered on school grounds by MSDH officials or local medical professionals partnering with the agency.

All vaccinations are voluntary and require a permission slip signed by a parent or guardian. Parents are encouraged to accompany their children during the injections.

Columbus schools already have completed their first round of vaccinations. Students 9 years old and younger who require a follow-up booster will receive those injections over the next two weeks.

Students at Franklin Elementary Medical Sciences and Wellness Magnet School received the boosters Thursday, while students at Stokes-Beard Elementary Technology and Communication Magnet School will receive them today. At Cook Elementary Fine Arts Magnet School, the boosters will be administered on Dec. 9; and Fairview Aerospace and Science Magnet School’s boosters will be administered Dec. 14.

Starkville School District partnered with Oktibbeha County Hospital and MSDH Thursday to administer vaccinations to students at Sudduth Elementary (400 of 1,100 students), Overstreet Elementary (115 of 300 students) and Armstrong Middle School (56 of 600 students).

Students at Ward-Stewart Elementary and Henderson Intermediate will receive vaccinations today with Starkville High School to follow Dec.

Students requiring the follow-up injection will receive it in January.

SSD Superintendent Judy Couey said no parents have called the district to voice concerns about the vaccinations.

Steve Montgomery, superintendent of West Point School District, also has heard no complaints or concerns from parents. Still, WPSD will host vaccinations at just two of its eight schools. The remaining vaccinations will be available at the West Point Health Department.

“I offered (MSDH) any school building they wanted,” said Montgomery. They said they wanted to do that at the health department.”

MSDH nurses will be in West Point Dec. 14 to administer the first round of vaccinations to students in grades five-12, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten at the Clay County Health Department from 3-7 p.m.

Nurses from Coggins Family Medical Clinic will administer the vaccines at Church Hill Elementary and Southside Elementary schools.

Oktibbeha County School District will complete vaccinations today after beginning Thursday. MSDH nurses visited the district’s four schools to administer the shots.

East Oktibbeha High School (27 of 230 students), West Oktibbeha High (28 of 140 students) and West Oktibbeha Elementary (48 of 210 students) received vaccinations Thursday. East Oktibbeha Elementary (110 of 340 students) will receive vaccinations today.

Risks from the inactivated H1N1 vaccine are similar to those from the seasonal flu vaccine: soreness, redness, tenderness or swelling at the injection site, fainting, headache, muscle aches, fever or nausea. Life-threatening reactions to vaccines are rare.

As with the seasonal flu vaccine, those with allergies to eggs should not get the H1N1 vaccine.

Symptoms of swine flu also are similar to those of seasonal flu, according to the MSDH -- fever, respiratory symptoms and body aches. H1N1 swine flu has contributed to a number of deaths in Mississippi, principally in those with pre-existing health conditions; 1,272 cases of H1N1 swine flu have been confirmed across the state since May 15. MSDH advises protective hygene to avoid illness.

Most interesting to note in these reports on the victims of this plane shootdown is that the Indonesian man currently being treated for his injuries has ‘confessed’ to Chinese secret police forces that he is a technician employed by the United States Navy at their mysterious Naval Medical Research Unit No. 2 (NAMRU-2) located in Indonesia that Indonesian Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono had previously called for the closing of “because its operations were too secretive and were incompatible with Indonesia's security interests.”

Swine flu has swept through about 22 million Americans from April to October, killing an estimated 3,900 people, including 540 children, health officials said Thursday.
The analysis represents the government's latest effort to assess a viral outbreak that in just six months has flooded emergency rooms and intensive-care beds in at least 48 states that have reported widespread flu cases. With flu season just beginning, an estimated 98,000 people have been hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
"We've been tracking influenza for decades," says Anne Schuchat, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. "What we are seeing in 2009 is unprecedented."
What the numbers don't reveal is what will happen next, because no one knows yet when the flu season will hit its peak or how many waves of cases to expect, says AThe new national estimates are extrapolations of data drawn from a CDC emerging-diseases network of hospitals, laboratories and health departments in 10 states and from reports of hospitalizations and deaths, Schuchat says. They illustrate the extent to which swine flu, also known as H1N1, is hitting children, who account for 8 million infections, 36,000 hospitalizations and 540 deaths. In a typical flu season, about 80 children die.
Arnold Monto, a flu expert at the University of Michigan, says the government must rely on estimates such as these because flu tests in doctors' offices are unreliable and most diagnoses are based on patients' symptoms. That makes flu reporting sketchy at best.
"We know we are missing cases," Monto says. "What they're trying to do with these estimation methods is fill in the gaps."
Fortunately, most flu cases so far have run their course after a few days of bed rest, fluids and aspirin or acetaminophen to combat fever, doctors say. But the disease has taken a disproportionate toll among pregnant women, diabetics and young people, especially those with neuromuscular ailments such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy.
In a typical flu season, which ends in May, 90% of deaths and hospitalizations involve people 65 and older. The H1N1 outbreak began in April; 90% of those who become infected and need medical care are younger than 65.
Schuchat urges people who appear to be getting severely ill and those with chronic conditions and asthma to quickly see a doctor. Antiviral drugs, such as Tamiflu and Relenza, are most effective when given soon after symptoms set in, she says. What worries her most is that flu season has barely begun: "We have a long flu season ahead of us."
